The production of breathable film is a very demanding process and has high requirements on the Calcium Carbonate, especially in the hygiene sector. Omya has developed a tailor made Omyafilm product line for the production of breathable films that meets these demanding trends.

Calcium Carbonate is the most commonly used mineral for process and product optimization and cost optimization in Plasticized PVC. Typical applications for Omya Calcium Carbonate include edge guards and trim strips for the automotive industry, joint sealing strips and in the consumer goods industry door seals for refrigerators and flexible hoses. In modern PVC low voltage cables, calcium carbonate is used in the insulation, bedding compound and sheathing. Omya has the right portfolio of Calcium Carbonate grades for every application and supports its customers in product development.

White opaque BOPP, also known as pearlized film, and Polypropylene woven bags are products that are almost impossible to produce without Calcium Carbonate. However, Calcium Carbonate is also used in many other PE film applications to improve critical film properties such as tear resistance and of course to reduce costs.

Polylactic Acid (PLA) and Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) or compounds containing one of the two materials are the material of choice for applications such as fruit and vegetable bags, chip bags, BOPLA packaging films and agricultural films. The use of Calcium Carbonate in these hydrolysis-sensitive polymers requires a special surface modification on the calcium carbonate to prevent polymer degradation during extrusion. Answering the market demand to use more calcium carbonate in biopolymers, Omya has developed Omya Smartfill, which also enables higher filler loads and improved film properties.

In the production of white opaque biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate (BOPET) film, it is important that the minerals have good dispersibility to avoid filter clogging and film breakage. Originally, minerals with a very high specific density and carbon footprint were used. However, with OmyaPET, films with a lower density and improved carbon footprint can be produced without compromising film manufacturing process performance. Thanks to OmyaPET, it is possible to produce BOPET films with identical opacity but at lower density.
